Garage conversions are some of our favourite jobs — a fortnight or so of work that turns dead storage into a usable room. We have completed a run of them recently across Wythall and the Solihull area, from strip-out and floor insulation right through to the finished, decorated room.

A typical conversion

We break out the old floor, insulate and re-pour, block up the garage door opening and form the new window, then build up the walls with insulation and plasterboard. Roof, fascias and guttering get renewed if they need it. Electrics are first-fixed for sockets, lighting and heating, the room is skimmed, and second fix and decoration finish it off.

Boxing in the awkward bits

Most garages have a fuse box, gas meter or pipework somewhere inconvenient. Rather than leave it exposed, we design in cupboards and boxing so the finished room reads as part of the house, not as a converted garage.

Integral, attached and detached garages

Integral garages are the most straightforward, since the walls and roof already tie into the house. Attached and detached garages usually need more work on insulation, damp proofing and heating — we will set out exactly what yours needs before you commit.

Garage Conversions questions

How long does a garage conversion take?
Two to four weeks on site for most conversions. Our recent Wythall conversion ran to roughly two weeks of intensive work covering floor, blockwork, re-roof, fascias and guttering, followed by internal finishing.
Do I need planning permission?
Converting a garage into living space is usually permitted development, but Building Regulations always apply — floor and wall insulation, ventilation, fire safety and electrics all have to be signed off. We handle that side of it.
Will I lose the storage completely?
Not necessarily. On plenty of jobs we partition off a section at the back for storage and convert the rest, which keeps somewhere for the bikes and the lawnmower.
